10 "Quick" Reactions to the 2016 Emmy Nominations

1)  I completely understand that in Peak TV, the Emmy voters are going to leave off some obvious choices just because there’s not enough hours in the day to see everything that’s great. But at the same time, now is the perfect time to jump ship on the old shows floundering and let the new ones roll over you like a calm, sunny day. Shows like Homeland, House of Cards, and Downton Abbey are well past their prime, yet are beloved by the Emmy voters. Every year Emmy voters vote on what they did before and not necessarily on the quality of the individual season in front of them, and every year we get upset. I don’t know why we do this to ourselves.

2) Unfortunately, little room for newcomers meant a shut out for an incredible show like The Leftovers. Justin Theroux was always a dark horse to get a Best Lead Actor nomination, which was always a shame, but there was also no love for Carrie Coon, Regina King, or Kevin Carrol. And even though the show was clearly one of the 7 best dramas according to all TV critics, the show couldn’t beat out other shows about old British people and a CIA agent with a mental disorder.

3) People love to shit on the Golden Globes, yet for some reason give the Emmys a pass because they appear more prestigious. Both award shows and their voting processes have their faults, but at least the Golden Globes recognized that Crazy Ex-Girlfirend is at worst the Best Comedy on television and at best the Best Show on television. No love for either the show or it’s star Rebecca Bloom at the Emmys this year.

4) I named Orange Is The New Black as the best show on television in 2015, yet the Emmys felt differently as this is the first year that the show and its star (yes, she is the star) Taylor Schilling didn’t receive a nomination. Although, in fairness, I know a lot of fans and critics thought the show’s third season was its worst because there was no Big Bad. People were so down on the show that even two-time Emmy winner Uzo Aduba couldn’t sneak her way into the competition.

5) Peter Dinklage is an American treasure and a staple in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, but for the longest time he was the only one there from his show. This year he’s joined by Kit Harrington who plays Jon Snow. We all love Jon Show, but are we just going to forget the six years of bad, emo acting just because we enjoy the trope his character represents? The men are joined by Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, and Lena Heady on the Supporting Actress side and of course the reigning champ, the show itself, gets to defend its title.

6) The Emmys like the pride themselves on awarding comedy shows for actually being funny. That’s why hit shows worthy of winning like Desperate Housewives and Orange Is The New Black (at least when it was eligible in the comedy section) never did. Yet, when something like Andy Samberg’s delightfully goofy 7 Days In Hell comes along, it’s deemed too “out there” and not even worthy of a nomination. And this is a category that nominated A Very Murray Christmas.

7) I don’t watch The Americans, but it’s hard to write a reaction piece without giving the little engine that could some love. Critics fucking jizz themselves over this show, and it’s finally paid off. Not only did its stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell gets nominations, but the show itself finally broke through the Outstanding Drama Series glass ceiling.

8) The Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie is fucking stacked. Bokeem Woodbine and Jesse Plemmons from Fargo, Emmy darling Hugh Laurie, and John Travolta, Sterling K. Brown, and David Schwimmer from The People vs. OJ Simpson. I honestly have no idea who I’m rooting for. * wink *

9) At one point Modern Family dominated the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nominations. This year they only get one- Ty Burrell. Louie Anderson gets a nomination for Baskets which The Internet is sure to love, but only one half of Key & Peele, Keegan-Michael Key gets a nod.

10) Laurie Metcalf earned herself three acting nominations: 1) Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (The Big Bang Theory), 2) Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Horace and Pete), and 3) Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Getting On). #GetItGirl.
