How Well Did I Do On My 2014 Emmy Predictions?

DRAMA

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Breaking Bad (AMC)
* Downton Abbey (PBS)
* Game of Thrones (HBO)
* House of Cards (Netflix)
* Mad Men (AMC)
* True Detective (HBO)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 6 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Stayed the course and just be the awesome.

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Not for me!

OBVIOUS SNUB: The Good Wife (CBS)

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
* Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey)
* Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom)
* Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
* Kevin Spacey (House of Cards)
* Matthew McConaughey (True Detective)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 5 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Predicted Woody Harrelson (True Detective) over Bonneville

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Not really

OBVIOUS SNUB: Martin Sheen (Masters of Sex)

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Claire Danes (Homeland)
* Connie Britton (Nashville)
* Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men)
* Kerry Washington (Scandal)
* Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex)
* Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbery)
* Robin Wright (House of Cards)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 5 out of 6 (although I predicted 7)

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Not predicted Moss or Britton to earn a nomination and predicted Julianna Marguiles (The Good Wife) to earn one

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Many will say they were surprised by Dockery, but those critics are dumb and shouldn't have predicted the demise of Downton Abbey. However, the exclusion for five-time nominee Elizabeth Moss here is a huge shocker.

OBVIOUS SNUB: Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
* Dean Norris (Breaking Bad)
* Jeffrey Wright (Boardwalk Empire)
* Jon Voight (Ray Donovan)
* Mandy Patinkin (Homeland)
* Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 4 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Predicted Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife) over Norris and Wright. I knew going against Downton Abbey was dumb, but both Norris and Wright seemed like locks.

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Josh Charles (The Good Wife)

OBVIOUS SNUB: Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) & Jeffrey Wright (Boardwalk Empire)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad)
* Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
* Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
* Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey)
* Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
* Michelle Monaghan (True Detective)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 4 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Predicted Lena Headley (Game of Thrones) and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) would get a nomination over Panjabi and Monaghan

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Lena Headley (Game of Thrones)

OBVIOUS SNUB: Molly Parker (House of Cards) deserves a nomination but there was no chance in hell she'd get one. Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) did a lot of stuff this past season that earned her a nomination in the past, but the former winner in this category failed to earn a nomination for the second time in two years.

COMEDY

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Girls (HBO)
* Louie (FX)
* Modern Family (ABC)
* Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)
* The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
* Veep (HBO)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 5 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE GONE: Predicted Silicon Valley (HBO) over Girls (HBO)

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Silicon Valley (HBO)

OBVIOUS SNUB: Parks and Recreation (NBC)

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
* Don Chedle (House of Lies)
* Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
* Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory)
* Louis C.K. (Louie)
* Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 4 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Predicted that William H. Macy (Shameless) and Ricky Gervais (Derek) would have earned a nomination over Galecki and Samberg.

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Ricky Gervais (Derek)

OBVIOUS SNUB: Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
* Anna Faris (Mom)
* Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
* Lena Dunham (Girls)
* Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
* Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 5 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Predicted former winner and movie star Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) over former movie star Anna Faris (Mom)

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Sort of Melissa McCarthy

OBVIOUS SNUB: Ilana Glazer (Broad City)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Adam Driver (Girls)
* Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
* Ed O'Neill (Modern Family)
* Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
* Tony Hale (Veep)
* Ty Burrell (Modern Family)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 3 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Truthfully, my predictions were correct and just because the outcome was different doesn't mean the prediction was wrong, because nobody would have predicted that both Eric Stonestreet AND Ed O'Neill would fail to garner a nomination. I should have been wiser and predicted that Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) would have earned one, but it's weird seeing him as Ty Burrell as the only adult Modern Family actors to earn an Emmy nomination. Fred Armisen (Portlandia) also earned a nomination.

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Fred Armisen (Portlandia)

Not only is it surprising that that Fred Armisen is considered a supporting actor on a show in which he's in every sketch and which he most likely fully dominates, but that he earned a nomination at all. I guess he's taking the "Bill Hader" spot. For the past two years, Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live) has earned a nomination in this category, and since he's ineligible, they decided to give it to another SNL alum with a similar skill set. Although if the Emmy's did decide to go that route, I would have picked Taran Killem from SNL instead.

OBVIOUS SNUB: Adam Pally (The Mindy Project)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS

MY PREDICTIONS:

* Allison Janney (Mom)
* Anna Chlumsky (Veep)
* Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
* Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is The New Black)
* Merritt Weaver (Nurse Jackie)
* Sophia Vergara (Modern Family)

HOW WELL DID I DO: 4 out of 6

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE: Who would have guesses that 2013 winner Merritt Weaver and Modern Family adult cast member Sophia Vergara would not have earned nominations. Those spots went to previous nominee Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) (who's nomination is not a surprise) and Kate McKinnon (SNL) who's nomination is a surprise.

SURPRISE NOMINATION: Kate McKinnon (SNL)

OBVIOUS SNUB: Cristin Miloti (How I Met Your Mother)
