Recently, the Emmy's released every person and show eligible in all of their categories for the 2014 Primetime Emmy's for their nomination ballot. This post is dedicated to everything related to Outstanding Comedy Series category. It will be both who I think will actually earn a nomination as well as who I think deserves to earn a nomination. However, there is one main ground rule- I have to go off of the actual Emmy nomination ballot. Which means that if the series isn't actually eligible to earn a nomination in real life, then it's not eligible to be mentioned in this post. Makes sense, doesn't it? Let's begin!
WHO I THINK WILL GET A NOMINATION:
- Girls (HBO)
- Louie (FX)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
- Veep (HBO)
- Louie (FX)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)
- The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
- Veep (HBO)
COLD HARD LOCKS: Girls, Louie, Modern Family, Big Bang, Veep
STRONG EDUCATED GUESS: Orange Is The New Black
WHAT I'M PROBABLY WRONG ABOUT: Nothing. I'd bet good money that all six will earn an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination... which means I'm absolutely wrong somewhere.
Not only has Modern Family earned an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination every year it's been eligible, it's also won every year it's been eligible. There's no reason to think it won't get nominated again. Another ratings juggernaut, The Big Bang Theory (which is actually the most watched comedy show right now), is also poised to earn another nomination. The CBS sitcom has been nominated here the past three years, and there's no way in hell it doesn't earn a fourth one this year.
Now on to a pair of HBO comedies. Both Girls and Veep have earned a nomination in this category here every year they've been eligible, and I expect both shows to re-earn a nomination in 2014. If either show doesn't earn a nomination again it's Girls, who didn't have "as good" of a season as it did in year's past, but in a weak year, I fully expect the Lena Dunham vehicle to get nominated again.
Surprisingly, Louie has not earned an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination every year it's been eligible, and it earned its first nomination last year, but in another strong year from the show with little competition, Louie is going to make it two in a row.
All five of the shows I previously mentioned here earned a nomination in 2013, and the sixth 2013 show, 30 Rock, isn't eligible this year. That means Orange Is The New Black is going to swoop in and earn the last spot. OITNB was universally considered the second best show of 2013 behind Breaking Bad and the Netflix dramedy is just so good that I expect it to earn a butt load of nomination no matter what. Plus, the fact that it's second season is "currently airing" right now only helps to increase its profile among Emmy voters. The 2013 Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, could also make a run, but I think the barrier to entry is just too high for the show to sneak in a nomination.

IF I HAD AN EMMY BALLOT:
- Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX)
- Community (NBC)
- Key & Peele (Comedy Central)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)
- Parks and Recreation (NBC)
- Community (NBC)
- Key & Peele (Comedy Central)
- Modern Family (ABC)
- Orange Is The New Black (Netflix)
- Parks and Recreation (NBC)
POTENTIAL OBVIOUS SNUB: Parks and Recreation (NBC)
I think Brooklyn Nine-Nine had an "A-" first season and Community had a fucking rock star "A" season this Emmy eligibility period, and both were probably better as a whole than Parks and Recreation, but no show has been as dominant and good as Parks and Rec has been over the past six season. Plus, Emmy voters are aware of Parks and Recreation as the show itself has gotten nominated here before and Amy Poehler consistently gets nominations. Emmy voters are absolutely oblivious to Community and it's yet to be seen if Emmy voters watched the low-rated Brooklyn Nine-Nine. After as good of a season as Parks and Rec had, there's no reason it shouldn't earn a nomination in 2014.
