DRAMA
ACTUAL NOMINEES:
- Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley (Downton Abbey)
- Bryan Cranston as Walter White (Breaking Bad)
- Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy (The Newsroom)
- Jon Hamm as Don Draper (Mad Men)
- Damian Lewis as Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Homeland)
- Kevin Spacey as Rep. Frank Underwood (House Of Cards)
SURPRISED HE'S NOT NOMINATED: Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson (Boardwalk Empire)
SHOULD BE NOMINATED: Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens (Justified)
THOUGHTS ON THE ACTUAL NOMINATIONS:
- The person most likely to get nominated and least likely to win is Jon Hamm. There is truly nothing he can do or will be able to do to get an Emmy, but when the show is all said and done, at least he'll get to say he's aSeven Eight Time Emmy Nominee! He couldn't even win the Emmy for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his brilliant work on the 30 Rock live show last year. And don't think that his final season on the show will help him get an Emmy, because even though in his final year he won't have to compete with Bryan Cranston, he didn't have to compete with Bryan Cranston during his season 4 run, and he STILL lost the Best Actor Emmy (albeit to Coach Kyle Chandler for his final season on Friday Night Lights).
- Bryan Cranston is great as Walter White. Enough said. Although he already has three Emmys wins, I don't think anyone (except for die hard Jon Hamm fans like myself) would be upset if he earned another 2 more for the split final season of the show.
- While I thought Damien Lewis actually out-acted Cranston and Hamm in 2012, the same can not be said for his work in 2013. What helped out Lewis' acting last year, was that even HE did not know if he was a traitor or not during Season 1. However, not only did Lewis know what his character was during Season 2 of Homeland, the writers took the show and his characters so far off of the rails, that I hope he doesn't repeat in 2013.
- Hugh Bonneville. Eh. Whatevs. Standard Downton Abbey nomination that of course he won't win.
- Despite television being the far superior storytelling medium nowadays, the Emmys still suffer from Little Brother Syndrome from the Oscars. Even though over the past 5-10 years or so we've seen big movie stars like Charlie Sheen, and Alec Baldwin, and Don Chedle (see: below), and now Kevin Spacey do television, the Emmys will do everything they can to get Oscar winners Emmy wins. I'm not saying Spacey doesn't deserve a nomination (he absolutely does) or doesn't deserve to win (I have no idea who the clear cut favorite is), it's just I think he is going to win because he's Two Time Oscar Winner Kevin Spacey.
- I don't like Jeff Daniels, only because he stole a nomination away from Steve Buscemi. But the guy is a great actor. Just watch The Squid and The Whale. Or Looper. Or even Dumb and Dumber. The guy's good.
WHO WILL WIN: Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards)
WHO SHOULD WIN (ACTUAL NOMINEES): Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
WHO SHOULD WIN (ENTIRE ELIGIBLE FIELD): Hamm or Cranston
COMEDY
ACTUAL NOMINATIONS:
- Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy (30 Rock)
- Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth (Arrested Development)
- Louie C.K. as Louie C.K. (Louie)
- Don Chedle as Marty Kaan (House of Lies)
- Matt LeBlanc as himself (Episodes)
- Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
SURPRISED HE'S NOT NOMINATED: Last year's winner Jon Cryer as who cares (Two and a Half Men)
SHOULD BE NOMINATED: Jake Johnson as Nick Miller (New Girl)
THOUGHTS ON THE ACTUAL NOMINATIONS:
- I haven't seen House of Lies, but let's be honest, neither has Emmy voters. Don Chedle only gets nominated because he's Oscar nominee Don freaking Chedle.
- I haven't seen Episodes, but let's be honest, neither has Emmy voters. Matt LeBlanc only gets nominated because... um... apparently Emmy voters stopped watching New Girl this past season?
- Love Alec Baldwin as an actor and as a Capital One spokesperson. As an actual person- eh.
- I hate, hate, hate Sheldon Cooper as a character. I know that means I should appreciate Jim Parsons as an actor, but I can't do it. There's no way anyone on the show would still hang out with him, especially after he threw EVERYONE under the bus this past season!
- No one plays a straight man in comedy better than Jason Bateman, and in comedy, the straight man needs to get more recognition (see: Adam Scott on Parks and Rec), but I'm done with this Bateman-schtick that he does. Bateman plays the same person in every role he's done since he first appeared on Arrested Development. He's the new Michael Cera.
- I don't watch Louie because apparently I'm not a real critic. Only true critics can appreciate Louie. I'm pretty sure Louie C.K. is doing alright for himself now though, and doesn't care about the Emmys.
